Across social media, creators are sharing fishing trips, family days on the water, liveaboard life, boat maintenance, and the occasional mistake that makes the whole experience feel real. That matters because boating can seem intimidating from the outside. Seeing someone explain how they got started—or simply show what an ordinary Saturday afloat looks like—can make the lifestyle feel more approachable.
The potential goes well beyond selling boats. A great creator can introduce someone to a local charter, a marina, a boating destination, or a product they had never considered. They can help marine businesses reach specific communities with a voice people already know and trust. And they can show that there are many ways to enjoy the water without owning a yacht.
We’ve already seen what this kind of storytelling can contribute. Discover Boating reported that its campaign with dozens of Instagram and TikTok creators generated nearly 50 million impressions and 2 million engagements. Those figures don’t prove that creator content alone drove boat purchases—the campaign included other media and marketing—but they do show the reach that authentic boating stories can achieve.
The next opportunity is to turn that attention into something lasting. Marine brands should look beyond follower counts and work with creators who fit their audience, know their subject, and can tell a useful story. A fishing charter might partner with a local angler to show a first-timer what to expect. A dealer might invite a creator to document the process of choosing a boat, including the questions buyers are sometimes hesitant to ask. The content should inspire people, but it should also help them take a next step.
That is a space I’m excited to help build through Boat Updates. I’m Jake Harris, owner of Boat Updates. Before this, I worked on social media for Dennis Rodman and other large social businesses, building a background in growth and monetization. I believe those skills can help boating creators and marine businesses form partnerships that are valuable to both sides—and, ultimately, bring more people into boating.
If you’re a boating creator, marine brand, charter operator, dealer, or anyone else interested in what creator partnerships could do for this industry, I’d be glad to lend a hand. Reach me at Jake@boatupdates.com.
The lift won’t come from views alone. It will come from stories that make people feel welcome on the water, businesses that give them a way to participate, and partnerships built to do more than generate a single post
